Let Newton be and there was light. --Anonymous December 25,1642, marks the birthday of Isaac Newton, one of the chief figures of the scientific revolution. He was born within a year of the death of Galileo. Newton laid the foundations of calculus, extended the understanding of light and color, and questioned what kept the moon in a regular path around the earth. This reasoning led to his establishing the Theory of Gravity (now usually known as the Law of Gravity.) Newton's views dominated scientific thinking until Albert Einstein questioned and extended Newtonian physics. Happy 355th birthday Sir Isaac! --Flo Wineriter |
